Hotspot
Gay Friendly Vienna

Vienna stands for tolerance like no other city and has become a hotspot for the gay and lesbian community in Central Europe in recent years. Vienna has already been shaped by homosexual people in the past: whether gay emperors, the famous composer Franz Schubert, generals such as Prince Eugene of Savoy or the architects of the Vienna State Opera, August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll. They were all gay and had a significant influence on Vienna's history.

Today, the city is a cosmopolitan metropolis, as evidenced not only by gay traffic light couples and Conchita Wurst as an ambassador for tolerance. There is the famous Life Ball, the annual Vienna Pride Week with the Rainbow Parade, the gay/lesbian Cafe Berg with the bookshop Löwenherz, or the Queer Film Festival.

The Kaiserbründl -  probably the most beautiful men's sauna in the world, which was already a meeting place for gay men in imperial times - is also a fixture on the scene. One of the most famous guests at the time was none other than Archduke Ludwig Viktor (1842-1919), also known as “Luziwuzi”, the gay brother of Emperor Franz Joseph, who also had a penchant for women's clothing. According to legend, the archduke once got himself slapped in the Kaiserbründl, then still called the Centralbad, because he apparently got too close to an officer. The rather conservative Emperor Franz Joseph then “banished” the Archduke to Klessheim Palace in Salzburg, where he remained until the end of his life.
