The hotel tradition since 1901

It was in the year 1901, when son of the winemaker family Prey came to Vienna and got married. And a proper wedding means a proper wedding present. That’s what we think. And his parents did it too.

In that case it was a hotel on the noble street at that time, the Gürtel in Vienna. All in all 8 stories and a largest wine cellar in the district (Hernals). A jewel of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco Architecture in central location. Very soon the hotel became a fixed meeting place of the whole district, it was even called a “little Sacher of Hernals” due to its good cuisine and friendly service.

During the World War II our turn-of-the-century building was badly damaged and wasn’t able to recover from bad times again. 30 years ago our parents (-in-law) acquired the hotel in Gürtel after having run successfully a hotel in Mariahilferstraße in Vienna. The biggest reconstruction in the history of the hotel began – a big challenge: instead of hallway bathrooms all rooms had to be provided with shower and WC, the hotel had to be adapted to the new safety standards, the interior and meublage weren’t up to date anymore…

After some years of wanderings me and my husband finally run the hotel, without forgetting its long tradition since 1901. Today our hotel possesses 74 individually furnished non-smoking rooms with all comfort of a dignified 3 stars hotel. Two elevators bring you to the stores. By all our reconstructions and changes we try to maintain the turn-of-the-century charm, the tradition and style of a Viennese hotel. Today is the Donauwalzer hotel – Vienna a prime example of a successful fusion of a historical architecture and a contemporary, classical design.
